During this educator workshop, K-12 teachers will spend time in the special exhibition, Pictures at Play: Metafiction in Art, looking closely at how the displayed images make use of some key metafictive storytelling devices.

Metafiction fundamentally means stories about stories, fiction about fiction.  In picturebook images, it can also mean pictures about pictures.  We’ll explore the ways that illustrators use a variety of techniques to engage viewers (and readers) in becoming aware of how story works.  We’ll talk about how we can use metafiction to build critical readers. The program will conclude with an art project in the Art Studio.

Participants are invited to stay after the workshop to visit the rest of the museum.

A limited number of workshop spots are free for preschool teachers and elementary teachers in Title 1 Schools through The Carle Community Fund. Scholarships are awarded at random and offered on a quarterly basis. Application deadline is October 1.
