Did you know that Kestrel Land Trust’s namesake, the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is one of the most rapidly declining species in Massachusetts? Because the causes for this decline are unclear, Kestrel has been working with the U.S. Forest Service, the MA Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, Mass Audubon, and others to observe kestrel populations in hopes of helping to determine and address those causes.
Join staff from the Kestrel Land Trust to learn more about the American Kestrel and the Kestrel Nest Box Project. The ongoing project is part of a larger effort by state agencies and nonprofits to preserve and restore habitat throughout the Commonwealth. This event will be held at the Silvio O. Conte National Fish & Wildlife Refuge in Hadley, which hosts five kestrel nest boxes. Participants will gather at the pavilion for a talk before walking the accessible trail to view the nest boxes up close.
